John D. Crystal

John D. Crystal, 86, of Ocean Township, NJ passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017.  Born in New York City, he resided in Glen Rock before moving to Ocean Township 12 years ago.  He was a parishioner of St. Michael R.C. Church in Long Branch and a former parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Ridgewood.

A graduate of The Bronx High School and Queens College, John served as a corporal in the Army from 1951-1953. He worked as a guided missile specialists at the Las Cruces White Sands Proving Ground in conjunction with the California Institute of Technology. After the service, he then enjoyed a long professional career spanning over 50 years as a highly respected marine insurance broker with industry leaders Johnson & Higgins, Alexander & Alexander and Fred S. James.

Beloved husband of Joan (Rickard) Crystal.  Loving and devoted father of Patricia Morris (Joseph), Nancy Rioux (Mark), Kerri Gardiner (Jimmy) and Maureen Crystal.  Cherished grandfather of Christopher, Patrick, John, Ryan, Caroline and Matty.  Loving brother of Francis Crystal (Iris) and Catherine Ruane. Dear brother-in-law of Patricia Ryan.

The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday, July 6, 2017, 4-8 PM at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ, 201-797-3500.  A Funeral Mass is planned for Friday, July 7, 2017, 1 PM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood, NJ.  Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Patriot Point LLC (a retreat for the nations’s wounded warriors), 1742 N Street NW, Washington DC 20036 or at PatriotPoint.org.

I am so sorry for your loss, thoughts and prayers to all of you, i had not seen john in a number of years, but he came to my office a few weeks ago, and he was very upbeat, and looked really well, he was a joy to be around he will be missed by all who knew him
