John Robert Kearns


John Robert Kearns 90, of Saddle Brook, NJ passed away peacefully on December 9, 2017. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Hawthorne. He was a World War II Navy veteran from 1945 to 1948 and served his country with honor. Sixty four years ago he moved to Saddle Brook after he married Marilyn Miller where they raised their son and two daughters. John worked as a carpenter six days a week for Shotmeyer Brothers of Hawthorne for 40 years. He and his wife created wonderful memories by vacationing each year with the entire family at the New Jersey shore. He enjoyed the outdoors, boating, fishing, swimming and gardening. A faithful and active parishioner he was a member of the Holy Name Society and did much volunteer work at St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church in Saddle Brook. He was a kind hearted and compassionate person. Family and helping others was his focus.


For 64 years John was the beloved husband of Marilyn (Miller) Kearns.  Loving and devoted father of John Kearns Jr. and his wife Joanne, Janice Baliga and her late husband Thomas, and Sharon Wejsa and her husband James. Cherished grandfather of Shari and Jennifer Wejsa, Amanda Baliga, and Ryan Kearns. Great grandfather of Cali Baliga. Brother of Terry Meeker and the late Frank and Thomas Kearns, Jenny Meyer, and James Kearns and his surviving wife Ursula.


The family will receive relatives and friends Friday, December 15, 2017, 6 -9pm at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ, 201-797-3500.  A Funeral Mass is planned for Saturday, December 16, 2017, 11:30 am at St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church, 488 Saddle River Road, Saddle Brook, NJ. Please arrive at the funeral home at 10:30 to go in procession to the church.  Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.


In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John to the Paramus Veterans Memorial Home, 1 Veterans Drive Paramus, NJ 07652 would be appreciated.
