Vincenza Castiglia

1/12/2018

Vincenza Castiglia (nee Manuele), 97, of Elmwood Park, N.J. made her transition to the angels on January 12, 2018 after a long and valiant battle with complex health challenges. She exhibited unparalleled faith, courage, strength, perseverance, and love until the moment of her passing. Born on August 20, 1920 in Johnstown, PA, she was the fourth born child of Paul and Angelina (Bastante) Manuele. The family moved to Solarino, Sicily in 1923. There, she met and married her beloved husband Santo Castiglia who preceded her in death in 1992. In February 1947, she was the first of seven siblings to lead the courageous path back to the United States on the SS Marine Shark.  She remains a devoted and cherished mother of Angela Craft, Joseph (& Anne), Paul (& Sharon) and Sal (& Dianna) Castiglia, who survive her.  She is also the beloved Nonna of Danielle Craft, loving grandmother of Joseph, Paul, Patty, Paul, Scott, Glenn, Noelle, Michael, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Also survived by her precious sister Paulina Riggio, brother Aurelio Manuele, and countless nieces and nephews. She now joins her dear and loving sisters and brothers in paradise, Antonina Barbagallo, Salvatrice Sabina, Francesca Piccolo, Enzo Manuele and Salvatore Manuele.  Among her many talents, Vincenza loved to cook, garden, sew and pray. Loved by all who knew her, she is described as a beautiful, nurturing mother and fearless leader who always put her children first. She will be greatly missed and live forever in our hearts.

A funeral mass is planned for Wednesday, January 17, 2018, 9:30 AM at St. Anne R.C. Church in Fair Lawn with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Paterson, N.J. The family will receive their relatives and friends Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, N.J.
