Hrisoula Georgiou

Hrisoula (Anastasopoulos) Georgiou, age 83, of Fair Lawn, NJ passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.  Born in Kastania, Greece, and raised in Athens, Greece, she immigrated to the United States in 1969, where she resided in Washington Heights, NY before moving to Fair Lawn, NJ in 1981.  She was a faithful parishioner of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff, NJ.  Hrisoula enjoyed needlepointing, crocheting, cooking, and baking, but her greatest joy came from selflessly caring for and spending time with her family, whom she loved immensely.  Her summers were spent with family at the beach, be it in the US or in Greece.

Hrisoula was the beloved wife of the late Vassilios N. Georgiou.  She is survived by her children, Paraskevi Georgiou and her husband Timothy Salvemini, and Agapi Schmarge and her husband Ken.  She is the cherished Yiayia (grandmother) of Vassilios (13), Christos (11), and Daphne (9).  She also leaves behind her dear brother, Nicholas Anastassopoulos and her adored sister, Anna Trihia.  She was predeceased by her two sisters, Stavroula Doulaveris and Efthimia Georgiadis.  She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other relatives, both in the United States and in Greece.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, October 11, 2020, from 6 to 8 pm at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ.  A funeral service is planned for Monday, October 12, 2020, at 10 am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 467 Grandview Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ.  Interment will follow at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

The family will be making a donation to the Monastery of Panagia Proussiotisa in Proussos, Greece. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hrisoula’s memory are welcomed and will be included as part of this donation.  Checks may be made out to Paraskevi Georgiou or Agapi Schmarge (Memo: Proussos) and may be sent to the funeral home or to the family directly.
