Eileen O'Brien


Eileen O’Brien, age 94, of Greenwood, DE since 2018 passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2021.  Born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, she immigrated to the United States in her 20’s residing in Brooklyn until moving to Hawthorne in 2015 to be near family.  Eileen studied nursing in England and earned her nursing certificate in August of 1949 allowing her to practice in England, Ireland and the United States.  Passionate about music and dancing, she also enjoyed reading and travel.

Prior to retiring in 1988, she was the head nurse for the critical care unit at Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn for 33 years.

Beloved daughter of the late Denis and Hanora (Coen) O’Brien.  Loving sister of the late Mary Carlin and husband Michael, the late Jerry and Julia O’Brien, the late Nora Mulvihill and husband Tommy, the late Michael O’Brien and wife Mona and the late Denis O’Brien and wife Maisie.  Cherished aunt of Peggy Sokolowski and husband John, Michael Carlin and Nora Carlin.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Ireland as well as many great nieces and great nephews in Ireland and the United States.

The family will receive relatives and friends Friday, January 29, 2021, 9 – 10:30 am at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 29, 2020, 11 am at St. Catharine R.C. Church, 905 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ.  Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eileen to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, www.alz.org would be appreciated.
