Walter "Ted" Theodore Sandin, Jr.


Walter “Ted” Theodore Sandin, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2021 surrounded by his family.  Ted was born in Hackensack, NJ and grew up in Ridgefield Park to the late Walter Theodore and Siri Margarite (Benzow) Sandin. He graduated from Upsala College in 1957.  He was a proud officer in the US Army National Guard. He was a longtime resident of Old Tappan, NJ and retired to Forked River, NJ.

Ted founded Visual Methods, Inc. in 1970 where he was president and owner for 26 years. An innovator and developer of covert CCTV products and access control systems, he was granted multiple patents for his unique and technologically advanced products. He was a leading expert and well known in the electronic surveillance and access control industries and provided instructional seminars to government and corporate security agencies.  He retired in 1996 and moved to South Jersey to enjoy living on the bay.

Ted loved spending time with his beloved family, boating, fishing, and travelling worldwide. He was the President of the Rivervale-Old Tappan Rotary Club and enjoyed attending meetings wherever his business and personal travels took him.  As an avid sailor, he was passionate about racing on the Raritan Bay and cruising in the Caribbean. He continued his talent and passion for art by watercolor painting throughout his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Priscilla (Tobler) Sandin.  In addition to his companion, Janet Jannoni, Ted is survived by his two children, Peter Sandin (Patricia) of Freehold and Cynthia Rae (Nicholas) of Ridgewood. He adored his grandchildren, Travis, Taylor (fiancé Henrique Ribeiro, DC), Kristina and William. 

The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday, March 7, 2021, 2-6 pm at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ,  A funeral service is planned for Monday, March 8, 2021, Noon at the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood, 722 E Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ.  Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.  In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ted to Alzheimer’s NJ, 425 Eagle Rock Avenue, Suite 203, Roseland, NJ 07068 would be appreciated.
