Samuel J. Birnie, age 87, of Saddle Brook, NJ passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.  Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, he resided in Saddle Brook for 56 years.  He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  Mr. Birnie was a parishioner of St. Anne R.C. Church in Fair Lawn.  A sports enthusiast, Sam enjoyed watching women’s college softball and was a loyal NY Mets and NY Giants fan.

Prior to retiring in 2004, he was a printer with Beechwood Press in Union City for many years.  He was also a crossing guard with the Township of Saddle Brook for 13 years.

Beloved husband of the late Carleen (Ordway) Birnie.  Loving and devoted father of Diane Sheldon and husband Andrew, James Birnie and wife Elizabeth, Kathleen O’Hagan and husband Brian and Christopher Birnie and wife Karen.  Cherished grandfather of Carleen Birnie, James Birnie, John Birnie, Connor O’Hagan, Angelina Birnie, Griffin O’Hagan and Rileigh O’Hagan.  Dear brother of the late Thomas Birnie and surviving wife Bonnie and the late Geraldine Muttik and husband Al.  He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and granddog, Gracie.

The family will receive relatives and friends Friday, June 4, 2021, 4-8 pm at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ, vpfairlawn.com.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 5, 2021, 10:30 am at St. Anne R.C. Church, 15-05 St. Anne Street, Fair Lawn, NJ.  Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.  In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sam to the Valley Hospital Foundation, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450 would be appreciated.
