Anne M. Byrnes


Anne M. (Murphy) Byrnes, 84, of Mahwah, NJ died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Born on June 23rd, 1937, and raised in the Bronx, NY, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the College of New Rochelle. Prior to moving to Mahwah, Anne spent 35 years as a resident of Glen Rock, NJ where she raised her four children. She began her professional career as a teacher at Saints John and Paul Elementary School in Larchmont, NY and St. Leo’s School in Elmwood Park, NJ. Anne went on to work as a senior probation officer for Bergen County Probation Services for 23 years before retiring in 2002.

Anne is predeceased by her loving parents Dr. Eusebius Murphy and Mary (Murray) Murphy, as well as her siblings, Thomas Murphy, and Mary Ellen Totten. She is survived by her children Elizabeth (Jim) Lee, Kevin Byrnes, Maura (Greg) Kiey, and Ellen (Paul) Schrettner, and her grandchildren Matthew, Mary Beth, Emily (Gary), Patrick and Michael Lee, Ryan, Meghan, and Bridget Kiey, and Katie and Jack Schrettner, as well as her brother-in-law Bill Totten, sister-in-law Maureen Murphy, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was a faithful parishioner of St. Catharine’s for many years, an active member of the Guild for the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, the Mahwah Senior Center and she served as treasurer for the Glen Rock Junior Women’s Club and the Irish Singles Club. 

In her free time, Anne traveled extensively, lovingly supported all of her grandchildren’s endeavors, and never missed an opportunity to enjoy the company of her treasured and devoted friends.

Visiting hours will be from 2p – 6pm on Sunday, October 3rd at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410, and a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, October 4th at  St. Catharine’s Church 905 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ 07452.  If you can not attend the Funeral Mass, you may do so by following  Interment will follow at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes, NJ.  

The family does kindly ask that all attendees please wear a mask while attending funeral services.
